Radical embodiment : neural dynamics and consciousness

چکیده

Embodiment and situatedness are now common themes in cognitive science1. Recently, Andy Clark drew attention to three controversial ‘radical embodiment’propositions often found in current research2: (1) understanding the complex interplay of brain, body and world requires the tools and methods of nonlinear dynamical systems theory; (2) traditional notions of representation and computation are inadequate; (3) traditional decompositions of the cognitive system into inner functional subsystems or modules (‘boxology’) are misleading, and blind us to arguably better decompositions into dynamical systems that cut across the brain–body–world divisions. These claims taken together express the viewpoint known as ‘enactive’ cognitive science3. Here we explore the implications of this viewpoint for the neuroscience of consciousness.

Radical embodiment: neural dynamics and consciousness.

We propose a new approach to the neuroscience of consciousness, growing out of the 'enactive' viewpoint in cognitive science. This approach aims to map the neural substrates of consciousness at the level of large-scale, emergent and transient dynamical patterns of brain activity (rather than at the level of particular circuits or classes of neurons), and it suggests that the processes crucial f...

Is Consciousness Embodied?

1. Introduction Consciousness is trendy. It seems that more pages are published on consciousness these days than on any other subject in the philosophy of mind. Embodiment and situated cognition are also trendy. They mark a significant departure from orthodox theories, and are thus appealing to radicals and renegades. It's hardy surprising, then, that consciousness, embodiment and situated cogn...

The Spread Mind:

If phenomenal experience is a physical phenomenon, it must occur at some spatial and temporal location. Can consciousness be situated in such a strong sense? Although the importance of embodiment and situatedness is often mentioned, most neuroscientists and philosophers alike consider phenomenal experience as an outcome of neural activity. In this paper, the question I would raise is whether th...

Inside Embodiment — What means Embodiment to Radical Constructivists?

The nervous system is operationally closed. It operates only in contact to itself. This astonishing claim has been made by Heinz von Foerster, one of the founders of radical constructivism. This work explores the consequences of his claim in the context of linear signal theory, embodiment and the creation of artifacts. In linear signal theory all transfer functions can be directly associated wi...

Consciousness and the Embodied Self

This paper deals with the relationship between the embodied cognition paradigm and two sets of its implications: its implications for the ontology of selves, and its implications for the nature and extent of phenomenal consciousness. There has been a recent wave of interest within cognitive science in the paradigm variously called ‘embodied,’ ‘extended,’ ‘situated’ or ‘distributed’ cognition. A...
